Recently, I watched a documentary called House of Z. This documentary is all about the rises and downfalls of Zac Posen's fashion designer career. It shows how he started as a budding designer at high school as he soon realised he didn't fit in with the other people at school and would much rather come home with dozens of sketches he'd done of designs.
The documentary takes you through how he enjoyed being a creator for fun and didn't see it as a business to start with, he just loved it because of his passion. He moved to London from New York and started designing in an apartment where his girl friends would come round asking what his latest designs were. He slowly got recognised as models were asking these girls where their dresses were from and eventually even Versace new about him. The documentary shows how Zac Posen got so successful at this time and started doing shows in places such as New York. However, he then started listening to the comments of the media saying that he's too young, that his work was awful. Rather than listening to his small team e.g his mum and his sister, who had been there from the start, he chose to listen to the media which then made him lose his unique style. He thought doing a show in Paris would win this fame back however he tried too hard to please people and over did it and the designs just didn't resemble his uniqueness. It showed that he was trying too hard to be what he thought the world wanted him to be, but then lost himself within the process because he wasn't being true to himself and forming his own opinions on his designs, which then caused people to not like his work.
Zac Posen took some time out and spent more time being focused on each individual design and produce less of them, and also more time with his team. This worked in the long run because it brought his personality of being a perfectionist back and this was easily shown within his work. He then put on a show of 25 intricate, detailed designs and everyone was wowed by this. Posen was so thankful and grateful for his team after this success and realised that he needs to be true to himself with out the opinion of the media and really be able to showcase his creativity.
Watching this documentary really made me realise the importance of working as a team and that all kinds of people need to be involved in the creative process from the design of the product to the launch. Another thing I took away from this was if you care too much about what other people think about your ideas then you will slowly lose your own individual style and identity, so it's important to not be affected by this.
