The glistening lip is back on trend. After Ariana Grande's 'Thank u, Next' music video aired a couple weeks back with her wearing a glamourous pink lip, everybody is raging about this chic 90's look.
The glossy lip definitely used to be that hard to wear, messy choice of make-up that not many people bothered with as a good, non-stick, matte lipstick was the way forward. However, as it is coming back into trend it may be the better choice of lipstick for making lips appear fuller and more plump. Which I 100% agree with!
Social media plays a huge part in putting this trend forward as it platforms many celebs following this glistening makeup obsession. Over the last year or so the beauty world has been very centred around having a glowing complexion, glossy hair and just generally looking healthy and fresh.
At the moment lipsticks are definitely ruling the market against any other type of cosmetic, with $11.2 billion dollars worth of sales in 2017 and the market for lip gloss grew a huge 6.9 percent reaching a total of $2.94 billion last year.
So how and why has this trend come back around?
90's inspired is what consumers are looking for, chucky trainers, crops tops and beauty trends that were around in that decade - such as the pouty, plumped, bold lip. So with the consumer looking for it, this 90's nostalgia style exactly what retailers are taking inspiration from.
Last week, Rihanna's sold out Fenty Beauty lip gloss range announced a brand new shade called 'Fu$$$$y'. The gloss is in a millennium pink shade and a non-stick product, which Fenty Beauty is well known for, solving this tragic problem of stickiness. Charlotte Tilbury has also moved away from matte lipstick and brought out a new limited-addition lip gloss called 'Superstar Lips' where she wanted to combine the 'high-shine' of lip gloss with the 'staying-power' of lipstick. Cult Beauty have seen a huge percentage increase
This big lip trend is also reciprocated through excessive lip fillers and plastic surgery which sky-rocketed when Kylie Jenner revealed she'd had temporary lip fillers in 2015. The hype to have bigger lips all started from here as everyone wanted to be like Kylie. People would even buy products to try and natural make there lips appear bigger.
I definitely think this is glossy trend will come in and out of fashion always but brands are really putting that luxury spin on it this time which I think will be really successful.
